Man In Prison For 35yrs For Not Paying For Waffles

Man In Prison For 35yrs For Not Paying For Waffles
Well, the story is a little deeper than it sounds, but 57-year-old Cornelius Newman has officially been sentenced to 35 years in the big house for ultimately walking out on a bill at a Waffle House in Dothan, Alabama.  Cornelius has been charged with first degree robbery in the matter by Circuit Court Judge Brad Mendheim this past Tuesday, June 5th.  He was found guilty of the robbery by a jury back in April.
The actual incident happened back on November 8th, 2010.  Newman allegedly "robbed" the waffle house twice within one hour.  He first ordered food but didn't eat it, and managed to get another individual to pay for it.  The second time he ordered food he did in fact eat it and walk out without paying.
According to Assistant Houston District Attorney Kristen Shields, Mr. Newman pointed a loaded shotgun at various individuals tried to prevent him from leaving the food spot without paying.  He was later stopped by police officers at a traffic stop and a 5-10 minute standoff ensued with both cops and Newman having firearms raised at each other.  He was eventually subdued by the police and taken into custody.
Cornelius Newman's defense in the case is that he suffers from constant bipolar disorder and that he hadn't taken his meds at the time when the "robbery" occurred.
It sounds more like he should be given psychological help rather than incarcerated for over three decades.  This is the type of world we live in, where killers and violent abusers can get off free of charge, and a man who is obviously disturbed gets carted away instantly without being given any other options for help.
