Most people have seen Tanney's YouTube video by now, the trick shot video that's "better" than UConn QB's John McEntee's, however it's Tanney that gets the call to the league, signing with the Kansas City Chiefs. Now before we go any further, Tanney isn't just a YouTube sensation, who had an amazing trick shot passing video and then got signed. He played a Monmouth College in Illinois, and set a Division-III career passing records with 14,249 yards and 157 touchdowns.
Keep in mind, given he did that in D-III, he didn't get many looks by the NFL right out of college, although he was given a tryout with the Buffalo Bills.
But with that said, his trick shot video gave Tanney quite a following, let alone, displayed a sort of accuracy that intrigued the Chiefs scouts. Don't forget to add in his numbers from Monmouth.
"It shows you a few things," said new Chiefs QB Coach Jim Zorn. "It really does. Plus, you like a guy that loves to compete. He's kind of got a good feel to him. He reminds me of Ricky (Stanzi). The pressure doesn't get to him. All the stuff he's got to handle, he's just moving right along. He's been great.
Zorn, a former NFL QB himself with the Seattle Seahawks, knows a few things about underdog quarterbacks.
Although he's only expected to be a "camp-arm", aka the fourth quarterback on the roster during an NFL team's training camp, some scouts believe that Tanney could stick as a practice squad guy this year, and possibly, with work of course, end up as a quality #3 or #2 as time goes on.
But in order for him to keep a job this year, he'll have to hit his recievers on the field, and not basketball hoops or moving trucks off the field.
