David Letterman Rips Justin Bieber for Ignorant Remark

Justin Bieber is 18 years old ... and believes Michelangelo painted the "Sixteenth Chapel" ... and last night, David Letterman ripped him for it.

Bieber was showing off his new arm tattoo on the "Late Show" ... when Dave, acting like a cranky disapproving old man, reached over and grabbed the fresh ink, causing Justin to scream out in pain.

While Justin forced a smile, Dave continued to give the Canadian singer a hard time ... and then advised Bieber, "Don't go nuts [with the tattoos] ... because more and more you see like the mural ... like the Sistine Chapel, it's too much."

Bieber replied, "I'm not going for the Sixteenth Chapel."

Letterman laughed ... and quipped, "Canadian high school."

While there's really no excuse for not knowing about one of the most famous places on the face of the Earth, Justin was under attack from the moment he stepped foot on the stage.

So, we gotta ask ...

Justin Bieber Alleged Photog Battery Now in D.A.'s Hands

Justin Bieber's alleged brawl with a photog was turned over to prosecutors today ... TMZ has learned.

Law enforcement sources tell us the L.A. County District Attorney's Office is now reviewing the case, and will determine whether Justin gets charged with misdemeanor battery in the May 27 incident.

As TMZ first reported, Bieber and the pap got into a physical altercation as JB was leaving a movie at the Calabasas Commons with gf Selena Gomez. The photog called the cops, but Justin and Selena were gone by the time they arrived.

We're told L.A. County Sheriff's deputies tried to reach Justin to discuss the incident, but never spoke to him. Biebs was out of the country for several weeks on a promotional tour.

Justin Bieber loves his screaming teenage fans so much, he will literally hand them an extremely limited edition award he just won -- without even realizing it -- at least that's what happened this weekend.

Bieber was in Toronto Sunday for the MuchMusic Video Awards -- and when he left the stage after accepting his trophy for UR Fave Artist ... he was accosted by several fans in the front row.

Bieber pump-faked with the award -- but a girl latched on to it, so Bieber handed it over ... obviously thinking she was an extremely young, extremely loud award show official.

But she wasn't -- and the random girl was later approached by a REAL award official, demanding she return the trophy ... which she did.

But Justin feels bad for getting the girl's hopes up -- his rep tells TMZ, Justin wants to track the fan down and get her a replica of the award. So far, the girl hasn't come forward.
