MYRTLE BEACH — A 16-year-old teen was
taken to an area hospital after being bitten by something while in the
Atlantic Ocean near Sixth Avenue North in Myrtle Beach, according to
authorities.
The teen was standing in about waist-deep water when
he suffered a bite to his foot, said Myrtle Beach police Capt. David
Knipes. The incident was reported to emergency officials about 12:15
p.m. Tuesday. The teen was transported by EMS with minor injuries.
Beach Patrol officers did not close beaches after the incident, Knipes said.
He said it was unclear what bit the teen but an investigation would continue to determine if it was a shark.
Myrtle
Beach authorities are awaiting information from experts at the
University of Florida, where a research team is reviewing photos of
injuries to four people that occurred while they were in the ocean last
Thursday during a 10-minute span, Knipes said.
Photos were sent to
the team to determine what bit those people, who were injured in the
water between 72nd Avenue North and 82nd Avenue North.
Authorities closed the beach for about two hours last week as a precaution.
Earlier
this month, a 25-year-old man was bit in the foot about 7:45 p.m.,
while swimming near the 2nd Avenue Pier in Myrtle Beach, police said.
