Two lanes of new U.S. 21 bridge opens between Rock Hill, Fort Mill

Part of a new four-lane bridge over the Catawba River connecting Rock Hill and the Fort Mill area is open to traffic.
Built with federal stimulus money, the $14 million U.S. 21 bridge is expected to be finished by Nov. 30, according to the state Department of Transportation.
It replaces the current two-lane bridge, which York County Engineer Phil Leazer said was “structurally deficient” and due for replacement.
The old bridge has been blocked off and traffic diverted to two lanes on the new bridge.
A crane will arrive Sunday to begin taking down pieces of the old bridge deck, said Jared Bragg, a DOT assistant resident construction engineer.
Over the next 41/2months, crews will demolish the old bridge. The completed new bridge will have four lanes of traffic, a center lane for future public transportation, sidewalks and bicycle lanes, Leazer said.
