Thief gets 11 years prison for stealing cigarettes from Fort Mill store

Jones Cemetery

  — A thief pleaded guilty last week to stealing thousands of dollars worth of cigarettes from Red Rockets Fireworks in Fort Mill in 2007.
Judge Michael Nettles sentenced Ernest Jones, 55, of Charlotte to 11 years in prison for breaking into the store alongside another man, said Assistant 16th Circuit Court Solicitor Leslie Robinson.
On Sept. 27, 2007, two men wearing bandanas over their faces pried open the doors of Red Rockets Fireworks, knocked a computer off the counter and used a construction barrel to steal $10,000 worth of cigarettes, according to a news release from the York County Solicitor’s Office.
Less than two weeks later, both men returned to the store and stole $15,000 worth of cigarettes.
York County Sheriff’s deputies charged Randy Tate, 47, and Jones with the burglaries.
Facing trial on these and two other York County burglaries, Tate agreed in 2009 to plead guilty to his charges and testify against Jones in exchange for an 11-year prison sentence followed by five years of probation, according to the release.
Jones opted to plead guilty to two counts of burglary and two counts of grand larceny last week after realizing that his co-conspirator would be testifying against him, the release states.
