A York man was sentenced to 23 years in prison without parole after he pleaded guilty to burglary, assault and battery, larceny and possession of a weapon last week.
Judge Michael Nettles accepted Brian Adamsguilty plea and sentenced him for assaulting a retired couple in March, said Assistant 16th Circuit Solicitor Mindy Lipinski in a release issued Tuesday.
On March 27, Adams physically assaulted Charles and Kay Aycock, both in their 60s, when they went to their daughter’s house to give their granddaughter a ride on their golf cart, Lipinski said.
Adams hit both Aycock s in the head and upper body repeatedly, states a news release from the York County Solicitor’s Office.
Adams ran into the house after the man said he had a gun on him. The couple fled back to their home and called 911.
The York County SWAT team and York County Sheriff’s Office K9 unit responded but were unable to find Adams.
Detectives determined that Adams stole two handguns inside the house and fled to a nearby area where his girlfriend picked him up. She then took him to her house in Clover, the release states. The SWAT team went to the house, where Adams surrendered but lied to officials about where he placed the guns.
Investigators discovered that he traded both guns for crack cocaine. Authorities were able to track the guns’ buyer and recover both pistols.
Adams’ criminal history includes previous convictions for arson and burglary, according to the release.
Before the incident, he befriended the couple, explaining that he was unable to get a job because of his criminal record. The couple gave him money to purchase Christmas gifts for his daughter and paid him to perform odd jobs around their house.
“Mr. Adams cruelly betrayed the trust and goodwill of the Aycock family,” said 16th Circuit Court Solicitor Kevin Brackett.
